From the Lecture Series

Pensacola Early Music Consort

The July 9 program featured a presentation and performance by the Pensacola Early Music Consort, which performs music from the late medieval and Renaissance periods, approximately 1400–1600.

Director Charles Tucker demonstrated and discussed several of the period instruments used by the Consort, including recorders, the six-foot sub-bass, gemshorns, krummhorns and hammered dulcimer. The sixteen-foot sub-sub bass, one of only seven such instruments in the world and the only one in North America, was also featured.

The program also explored the development of the road between Pensacola and St. Augustine, from disconnected animal trails to a constructed route, along with a biography of Father Michael Portier, who was appointed apostolic vicar for the territory from Mobile to St. Augustine.
